A Critical Dialectics on Sustainable Economic Development in Mitigating Nigeria’s Security Challenges

Abstract

Nigeria’s security challenges are dialectically rooted in a cycle of underdevelopment, where poverty, inequality, poor governance, and ineffective leadership fuel violence. This situation undermines sustainable economic development, damages infrastructure, discourages investment, and creates an environment in which lives and property are increasingly unsafe.

This study examines the impact of security challenges on sustainable economic development in Nigeria, with particular attention to the prevalence of kidnapping and the destruction of lives and property, which continue to hinder economic progress. It reflects on key factors driving insecurity and analyzes their implications for sustainable development and efforts toward mitigation.

The paper aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 Agenda, particularly Goal 16, which seeks to promote peaceful and inclusive societies, ensure access to justice, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels. Guided by Social Contract Theory and employing a critical dialectical methodology, the study identifies political instability, poverty, corruption, unemployment, and ethnic and religious divisions as major contributors to insecurity.

Findings emphasize the need to move beyond reliance on military force toward holistic reforms that rebuild trust, create employment opportunities, and diversify the economy. The study recommends, among other measures, that the state should provide effective security responses to crime while addressing underlying grievances and fostering unity among diverse groups. Such efforts are essential for mitigating, if not completely eradicating, security challenges in Nigeria.
